'Bee saviour' sugar cards could save starving insects
Inventor crowdfunds to produce reviver sachets after prototype successwww.theguardian.com/...
If you’ve ever felt a pang of pity for a starving bee struggling on the pavement in front of you, then help may soon be at hand. Or more precisely, in your wallet.
A community development worker has invented a credit card-style reviver for bees containing three sachets of sugar solution, which can be placed beside the insect to feed it.
Dan Harris, 40, is now crowdfunding to produce the “Bee Saviour” cardsafter the success of his prototype, with community groups and businesses in his local city of Norwich, including the Book Hive bookshop and a local pub, pledging to stock the £4 bee revivers.
Each card contains three indentations containing a beekeepers’ formula, secured by foil-backed stickers which can be peeled off.theguardian.com/...

The Honey Bee Diet Plan
A healthy bee colony works together to meet the needs of all members of the hive. The exact diet of a honey bee depends on the species, the age of the bee and the availability of food.
Bees eat nectar and pollen that is collected from flowers and blooming plants. This is true for other bees too, not just honey bees. You will see many types of bumblebees collecting nectar and pollen.
As honey bees gather sweet plant nectar, they may enjoy a sip if they are hungry. But there primary goal is to convert nectar into honey.
Bees need carbohydrates for energy but they need protein too.Protein is necessary for larval development .
Worker bees eat pollen(or bee bread) to encourage production of “brood food”. Brood food refers to secretions from glands in the mouth of nurse bees.
Bee bread is a mixture of pollen, honey and bee saliva. This fermented substance makes digestion of the pollen protein easier.
Bee larva are fed according to their future role. All fertilized eggs result in female larva. Whether the larva becomes a worker or a queen depends on the needs of the colony.
If the colony is preparing to swarm, or needs a new queen for any reason, some of the female larva will be fed a special diet.BEEKEEPING & HOMESTEAD LIVING
Bee Saviour Behaviour takes #savethebees to the streets!
A bee can only fly for so long between flowers before it runs out of fuel. It’s common to come across exhausted bees on the ground in cities! Our sugar solution carrier will fit neatly in your wallet, purse or pocket so that you can revive an exhausted bee when out and about

“The first time you peel back the sticker and put the card down next to the bee, you think, what’s going to happen? When I first tested it, the bee walked calmly onto the card and started feeding,” Harris said.
“It struck me that everyone who walks around a city will have walked past an exhausted bee. That means you’ve also walked past an opportunity to connect with nature.”
Harris came up with the idea after learning about bees’ fast metabolism and how quickly they can run out of energy. He also wondered how people living in cities could engage with nature more frequently.www.theguardian.com/...
